The Holy Family fled to Egypt and stayed there for around three years. They moved through Egypt from North to South and from East to West, leaving their footprints in many holy places all over Egypt. A photo gallery follows their steps, and witness their challenges and successes will give you the opportunity to experience the journey

of the Holy Family in a completely different way.

THE HOLY FAMILY AT MATAREYA

Eventually, the Holy Family left the desert behind them and made their way southwards, crossing the Nile to its eastern bank, and heading for Matareya and Ain Shams.

Once more crossing the Nile, back to the west bank, the Holy Family travelled southwards to the town of Al Ashounein but it seems that they did not tarry long there.

THE HOLY FAMILY WITHIN THE AREA OF OLD CAIRO

The area now called Old Cairo known as Misr El Kadima is among the most important locations visited by the Holy Family where the spiritual impact of their presence is most felt still; though their stay was brief, for the Governor of what was then Fustat, enraged by the tumbling down of idols at Jesus’s approach, sought to kill the Child.

THE HANGING CHURCH ( AL - MUALLAQA ) OLD CAIRO

The Church of the Holy Virgin St. Mary was built on the remains of one of the gates of the Roman fortress, Babylon. The high position earned her the name the Hanging or the Suspended Church.

THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY VIRGIN St. MARY AT MAADI

His church stands in a beautiful area on the Nile about ten kilometers south of Old Cairo. According to the tradition, the Holy Family sailed from this site to Upper Egypt. St. Joseph was able to finance the travel by boat using the gold, frankincense and myrrh that the three wise men had presented to the Christ the Child in Bethlehem.
